about

A true story.
A long time ago, i was very sad, bawling on a tram from Fitzroy to St. Kilda, and a man sat down next to me wearing giant headphones (before they were cool again).
After a while, I realised that he was listening to a Beatles playlist and I started paying attention.
You should know that my mother suffered terribly from Beatlemania in her youth. At the age of 6, when the Beatles came to Melbourne, she somehow convinced her father to drive her and her brother for two hours just so they could be at Essendon airport when the Beatles touched down.
On the way, the chap on the wireless announce that the Beatles had 'landed and snuck out the back way'. My dear Grandfather did a U-turn on the highway and drove his two youngest children to join the heaving sea of teenagers lapping at the shores of the Southern Cross Hotel.
Mum doesn't remember much except watching a girl faint and narrowly avoid being squashed by a police horse.
My Grandmother stayed home, suffused with horror as the man on the brand new tv set berated her. 'Mothers- if your daughters are out there, you should be ashamed of yourselves.'
This event is important- it solidified my mother's lifelong devotion (obsession?) with all things Beatles. We weren't allowed to dance to their records in case we scratched them, we had a veritable library of Beatles related literature, I could recite the lyrics of nearly every Beatles song before I was ten and could tell you which Beatle wrote it and even the circumstances under which the song was written.
When I was a teenager myself, I had a moment where I suddenly wondered if I actually liked the Beatles or if I was just indoctrinated when in utero. It was very much like how I imagine some people from religious families feel when they lapse.

So when I heard the songs from my childhood pouring out of a stranger's ears, I felt comforted. He noticed me being a bit creepy and smiled then offered the headphones to me.
He was listening to 'Here Comes the Sun' and then he sang the chorus.

Be kind to people. It really can make the world a nicer place to live.

lyrics

My Heart had split when the black dog bit
I forgot where i was when the howling hit
i couldn't meet their eyes- who wants to see a grown woman cry?
I was curled on my seat with my knees pulled tight

I'd been lonely all day, would have cried all night,
then you came along
with your heart healing song.

Through my tears I could hear the songs
from better days when I belonged to someone
the words poured like stars in my ears
the mersey beat dried my tears

Don't let me down- they're gonna crucify me
take those sunken eyes- learn to see
and in the end the love you take
is equal to the love you make

This one is for that wonderful man
who lent me a smile on the 96 tram and sang
'Here comes the sun'
And there came the sun

Through my tears I could hear the songs
from better days when I belonged to someone
the words poured like stars in my ears
the mersey beat dried my tears

He dried my tears with the mersey beat
I fared him well on Ackland street
I should have gone with him
I should have gone with him

Through my tears I could hear the songs
from better days when I belonged to someone
the words poured like stars in my ears
the mersey beat dried my tears
